Settimio Celio Gaudioso, known simply as Gaudioso, arrived in Naples by chance. Upon his death, he was buried between 451 and 453 AD in the cemetery area located outside the city walls, and his burial site soon became a place of veneration. From there, the Early Christian underground cemetery began to expand, eventually becoming the Catacombs of San Gaudioso.

Porta San Gennaro

Porta San Gennaro is the oldest gate in the city of Naples, mentioned in documents dating back as far as 928—a time when fear was rife regarding the Saracens, who had already destroyed the city of Taranto. It was the only point of entry into Naples during the ducal period for those arriving from the northern side of the city. The gate takes its name from the fact that the only road leading to the catacombs of the saint of the same name started here.
